There are many different types of yoga out there, from the
gentle Hatha yoga to the more grueling Kundalini or Bikram yoga. All of these
will require that your body is capable of stretching, flowing into and out of
various poses, and holding at times complicated positions. The right clothing
is essential for comfort while performing yoga, no matter what type you decide
to try. To get started with buying the right clothes for yoga if you are a
beginner, there are a few tips to keep in mind. The main thing to think about
is your personal comfort. More than anything, your yoga clothes should
allow you to move freely and without restriction. If you choose clothes for yoga that are too tight, they can
block the circulation of blood in your body and lead to discomfort or even
injury. Loose, breathable fabrics are the best option to regulate your
temperature and keep your limbs free to move as they need to into the various
yoga poses. Clothes made of elastic materials, such as leggings or spandex, can
also be a good fit for yoga because they hug the body without cutting off the
circulation or restricting movement. It can be helpful to wear shorts rather
than longer pants for yoga, because you will be able to see that your ankles
and knees are properly aligned when you are performing various poses.
Being able to observe your movements is critical when you
are beginning a new yoga program, because you want to keep your alignment
correct. This will help you to flow more easily and prevent injuries. The right
clothes for yoga will not obscure your movements, so that you are better able
to see what you are doing. Your instructor will also be better able to view
your movements this way as well. In most cases, you will not need to worry
about footwear, because yoga is traditionally performed in bare feet. However,
if you prefer, you can wear socks that wick away moisture from the feet to stay
cool and dry.
When you are trying on new yoga clothes, try doing a few
poses in them to see how they feel and how they move with your body. This will
also help you to choose the correct size. Temperature is another important
factor to consider. Some yoga classes will take place in rooms that are heated
to a high temperature, such as in Bikram yoga. Wear clothes for yoga that will
be comfortable in this environment.
